For the pure networking part, your first question is whether you want to go wired or wireless. I have a 5-port ethernet switch in my On-Q box, you probably can fit something with up to 8 ports in there easily. This of course depends on whether you have enough RJ45 jacks in the intended rooms.

The wiring in the walls is almost certainly CAT-5 cable, which is good enough for 100MBps ethernet but not 1GBps - good enough for data files and media, but not for e.g. using a file server to store the operating system.

Do your printers/scanner use USB interfaces or are they network capable on their own? Most consumer printers are USB only, this means they would be connected to the network through a computer like your Mac Mini.

If you run a business, I'd pay particular attention to backups for your file server. I use a TimeMachine like approach for my Linux setup, but have multiple portable backup disks that are used in alternating fashion.

Henning
As many of you have likely already noticed today, we have finally launched our new installment of citiCite.

Unlike the previous installment that paved the way for new networks to be created (Mueller Community is an example of A network), the new installment allows users to freely create networks for their neighborhood associations and/or organizations. In other words, we no longer need to intervene on the network creation process.

In addition to this major change, there are a number of new improvements that we are slowly rolling out to improve the overall user experience (as well as fixing bugs that have been on our plate).

As always, please let us know if there are any problems that you notice with the new software installment!

Thanks much,
Kevin Ludlow

      Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on setting up a home network to help run my small business more efficiently. I was hoping anyone with some expertise in the area could volunteer their opinion in my quest to build out systems that make sense for my needs - all comments are appreciated!

I have several computers that needs to be on a single network; most of these computers run Apple OSX Snow Leopard, but one does run Tiger (non-Intel CPU). There are also a couple Windows 7 PCs, and of course, iPhones.

My primary goal is to create a network where a single hard drive serves as storage that all computers can easily (and QUICKLY) access. If the network drive can serve as a media server for iTunes, that would be ideal, but not critical. I have looked at a Mac Mini Server which I think will accomodate an expanding businesses needs, but I've also looked at hooking up a Drobo setup to our existing 500GB Time Capsule. Like most of us, I have an OnQ box which I'd love to take advantage of, if it makes sense.

I have two printers and a scanner that I'd also like to hook up for network access.

Any thoughts or comments would be sincerely appreciated!

Aman

I agree that we would like the public hours to change to 2-8 and getting the lifeguards to do a 30 minute turn around. 12:00 is too early. Many times when we were there this summer they let us stay on the grass and it only took them 15 minutes to set up.

Speaking to APD Dist. Rep today, Ofcr. Drabek, he observed that the number of Mueller residents out walking, talking to neighbors, doing yardwork, sitting on porches, etc. is contributing to a relatively low level of crime in the neighborhood. Crime reports are available daily from spotcrime.com/ or upon request from http://www.krimelabb.com/_live/view/_view_byaddress.php

Rod, you know I love you, but you gotta be careful with this stuff!

First, the article posted is 10 years old from the 2000 census.

Second, the huge victory touted was a temporary restraining order that was relevant to the five people in the case so the federal district judge could research the issue.

Third and most damning, a google search of "Mark Brewer Census" reveals this article from the same WorldNetDaily website on the case:

Judge flip-flops on Census finding ... "Judge Melinda Harmon of the U.S. District Court in Houston, Texas, wrote in a 35-page statement, "The Court finds that there is no basis for holding Census 2000 unconstitutional.""

Unfortunately, the WorldNetDaily "articles" also seem to fall short of several elements of journalistic integrity, often using adjectives in their articles that clearly demonstrate editorializing by the articles' authors.

Bless the watchdogs, like Mark Brewer, they certainly have their place in society.

We the people should be both active in and skeptical of our governments at all levels, as that is the most important check-and-balance we have, but we should also maintain that humankind is basically good, and governs, in aggregrate, out of a sense of service, and not special interests.

Dusty
Dan,

Jerry Day has one opinion and the posting about the editorial in the Dallas Morning News "Why the Census is Worth your Time" is another. I found both interesting. Jerry Day advocates Americans being cognizant of the U.S. Constitution, and the rights derived therefrom; his setting of context in terms of legal precedent (the US Constitution and what it states about census-gathering) was, at least as far as my reading of the Constitution and its remarks about the Census, apparently correct. But I cannot claim to be a Constitutional Lawyer.

Dan: I don't know anything about chemical contrails. You'll have to educate us all on that one. We should be encouraging people to fill out the Census and return it, as our guest speaker Travis Co. Constable Bruce Elfant explained at the February neighborhood meeting. There are only 10 questions--and your information is also sealed by federal law for 72 years.

Some might be interested in this Monday editorial in the Dallas Morning News on Why the Census is Worth Your Time which explodes many of the myths surrounding the Census:http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/opinion/editorials/stories/DN-census_09edi.State.Edition1.282e1eb.html
Thank you so much for the responses/suggestions! Looked into Ballet Austin and unfortunately she will not make the cut-off for being 3. I will be sure to check out the others as well.

Sarah Bounds
Camacho Street

You've got it Bets. ...it's definitely been added to the 'in-the-works' mix of things =] Fortunately these have been getting knocked out pretty quickly as of late!

      Posted yesterday

So this isn't exactly on topic, I met a neighbor at the plant propagation workshop last weekend who thought you'd be interested. My name is Emily Levings, and with spring finally in the air, I wanted to offer my services to the neighborhood.

I started my own company, Designing for Place, and I specialize in edible landscapes, native plantings and zoned maintenance. I'm really passionate about what I do, and I want to see you enjoy your plants and outdoor space- especially to grow your own food if you're interested. So if you'd like help with design consultation (including containers), planting, transplanting, general maintenance- weeding, composting, mulching, pruning, etc. please let me know. The initial consultation is always free, and I offer affordable hourly or contract rates. It's a new business, so if you'd pass on my information to friends or family who may also be interested, I'd really appreciate it. My email is elevings@designingforplace.com, phone is 512.487.7585.

For more information, please visit my website at www.designingforplace.com.

Thanks, and have a beautiful day!
